Dr. James W. Dunnavant, Jr., the founder and CEO of 1-800-VENEERS®, first started transforming ordinary grins into beautiful smiles at his state-of-the-art practice in Las Vegas, Nevada. Always a perfectionist, the Doctor spent years developing his skills both in general as well as cosmetic dentistry.
Over time, Dr. Dunnavant increased his focus on cosmetic dentistry and was amazed by the incredible life transformations his patients underwent when he enhanced their dull, damaged teeth with porcelain veneers and crowns. What he found most interesting was the connection he saw between the quality of a patient’s teeth and their sense of happiness and well-being. It was a connection the Doctor began to study more closely.
Dr. Dunnavant loves to travel. And it was during his travels that he continued to see a connection between a healthy smile and a sense of happiness. Time and time again, the Doctor ran across wonderful people who, for no fault of their own, were reluctant to smile because of dental issues that he knew were correctable. He thought about how unfortunate it is that so few people can afford the $1,300-per-tooth cost of perfecting a troubled smile.
It became obvious to the Doctor that if he could find a way to offer the best porcelain veneers for a lower price, he could positively impact the lives of many people. But how could he do this? Quality costs money—and the Doctor has always been unwilling to sacrifice quality for the sake of price.
With these ideas in his head, Dr. Dunnavant attended the first world-wide convention on Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. While there he was introduced to successful business people who were enrolled at the Wharton School of Business. He discussed his idea of putting veneers within the financial reach of more people. He received some great suggestions and, as a result, Dr. Dunnavant enrolled at Wharton School of Business himself so he could further refine these ideas.
He and his business school friends, some of whom are now partners, decided to approach the situation from a simple business perspective. The goal from the start has been to provide the highest quality veneers through the highest quality cosmetic dental surgeons at a significantly lower price. After months of creative brainstorming and tough discussions, Dr. Dunnavant and this talented group of business people crafted a plan to launch 1-800-VENEERS®.
